Arrowhead Middle School Students Step Up to Help the Community

Despite the challenges they’ve faced in recent months, students and staff at Arrowhead Middle School continue to rise above adversity, choosing to show compassion and giving back to their community.
Members of the Student Council at Arrowhead decided to hold a food drive in response to what they were seeing in the media regarding the recent shutdown of the federal government.
“The students thought it was important to respond to the food scarcity that was associated with families and the government shut down that swept our country recently,” said Arrowhead Administrative Assistant Chay Williams, who is also a co-sponsors the student group.
In response, students held a school-wide and community food drive from November 5 through 18, and their efforts paid off.
In just two short weeks, they collected more than 1,100 canned goods and 739 non-perishable food items.
Student Body President and 8th-grade student Kadin Smith believed it was a good idea to help people who may not have food and may not have the money to buy food.
His classmate JaVuan Simmons agreed. “I don’t like to see people struggle, especially with the cold weather coming. Doing this gave me a great feeling in my heart,” he shared. Simmons added that he was grateful to have parents who can provide for him and his sister.
Arrowhead Middle School has had its share of difficult times. Earlier this school year, students and staff were displaced after a small fire erupted in a utility room near the cafeteria. A similar fire last November also displaced them.
Students and staff are proving that a couple of setbacks will not deter them from stepping up to help their community.
“I am extremely proud of them all. Families opened up their hearts and poured out love by the masses,” said Williams.
Many thanks goes to Jennifer Dubreuil and Rabiah O’Neal, who are also student council co-sponsors.
